LSM Conducting Institute

The inaugural LSM Virtual Conducting Institute is an opportunity for educators and conductors from all disciplines to refine their conducting techniques, practice new concepts, explore best practices in programming, and make valuable connections with new colleagues and mentors. As part of Lutheran Summer Music’s mission to serve young musicians and help them realize their fullest potential, this program is designed with teachers in mind to provide you with as many tools as possible to help you best serve your current and future students.


Included in the LSM Conducting Institute

Individual conducting lessons: To be scheduled at the mutual convenience of the student and the faculty between February 15- May 1. All three lessons will be with the same faculty member, however participants may register for additional tracks and participate in lessons with one, two, or all three faculty members. For each track, you will receive: 

  • A consultation meeting with a faculty member prior to academy to define goals and objectives of learning, repertoire, etc. 

  • 3 private conducting lessons (50’ each) via Zoom  

Core Conducting Technique Course via GoReact  A library of resources and opportunity to receive feedback on personal conducting videos.  Complete as many or as few as you would like.   

  • Based on Max Rudolf’s The Grammar of Conducting, and paired with Dr. Sütterlin’s “Healthy Conducting” approach (“expressive, clear, and healthy”) 

  • Access to over 60 instructional videos to choose from online via GoReact for self-paced learning.  

  • Participants can post videos of themselves practicing the learned concepts and excerpts. Faculty will provide time-stamped commentary on their submitted GoReact videos. 

Seminars, Group Sessions, Discussions: Four evening sessions held synchronously, Wednesdays from 7-8pm Central time, from February 17-March 10. For a fulfilling community experience, the entire cohort is encouraged to participate whenever able. A recording of the sessions will be made available to anyone who is unable to join.  

Group session topics will include:  

  • Introductory Seminar: “Healthy Conducting: Reducing tension while gaining clarity and expressiveness.” 

  • Seminar: “Score Study, Analytical Skills, Research 

  • Seminar: “Score Marking Systems 

  • Seminar: “Exploring Under-represented composers and lesser known works 

  • And more 

Certification 

At the close of the program, participants will receive a certificate verifying their participation which will include the number of educational hours completed 

Time Commitment

Private lessons are scheduled at the mutual convenience of the student and teacher between February 15th and May 1st, 2021.

Four optional yet encouraged synchronous evening sessions will be held from 7-8 PM Central Time on the following dates:

  • 2/17/2021

  • 2/24/2021

  • 3/3/2021

  • 3/10/2021

All other program elements may be accessed asynchronously at the convenience of each student.

Qualifications and Tuition

  • Participants must have completed at least one semester of collegiate conducting instruction or equivalent experience.

  • Participants must be 18 years of age or older 

  • Participation Fee: $195

    • $175 for additional faculty track
