LSM is for students who have completed grades 8-12. Students entering 8th grade are considered on a case-by-case basis.

The LSM experience offers a variety of offerings and a lot of flexibility. Students can focus in one area, or do a lot of different things! Every student’s schedule will vary slightly based on their instruments, ensembles and elective choices. That said, here is what a typical day in the life of an LSM student looks like:

Students at LSM are young people who want to devote four (or two) weeks to making music in a supportive and affirming community. Our students come from many different backgrounds and experiences.

In 2022…

Students from 30 states were represented – California, Texas, New York, Florida, Colorado, Illinois, Iowa, etc. Students come from all different communities – some live in suburbs, small towns, large cities, while others live in rural areas. Approximately one-third of our student body were students of color. Over half of our students came from Lutheran backgrounds (ELCA, LCMS, etc.), while the rest came from other Christian denominations and religions, or had no religious background at all. Students were all ages – 8th grade all the way to high school graduates. Students also came from all economic backgrounds, with most of our students receiving some form of financial assistance to attend LSM. Musically, some of our students were beginners, while others were conservatory-bound. Some students simply love music as a hobby, while others intend to pursue a career in church music, music education or performance.

We celebrate diversity in our community and want LSM to be a place of belonging for all.

The vast majority of LSM students attend our four-week Full Session. The Full Session is highly recommended for all students, as it allows full participation in all electives, Festival Week offerings and an immersive growth experience which is at the heart of LSM. Our two-week Half Session is a good option for students who have other conflicts and commitments, or for students who aren’t quite ready to spend four weeks away from home. Still, if you’re available for the four weeks, do the Full Session. After two weeks, you’ll feel like you’re only just getting started!

Students come to LSM with a range of musical skills and experiences. Our faculty at LSM will meet every student where they are and help them grow! Students can expect to be challenged musically, no matter whether they are conservatory-bound, or new to private lessons.

Our musical approach at LSM is one of encouragement and support, not competition or judgment. We do ask for an audition video as part of the LSM application, but this is not to exclude students based on musical skill. Rather, it’s to get to know students prior to their arrival and get a sense for where they are at musically, so that we can better prepare for their LSM experience. The audition process also helps us to set a tone of musical professionalism for any student who attends LSM, as they will be studying with college-level faculty.

Finally, LSM also offers ensembles and opportunities that require additional auditions and have limited spots open – for example, our Student Concerto, or the Jazz Ensemble. But students need not worry about “getting in” to LSM based on their musical skills.

Full Session (four weeks): $2,695+ application fee

Half Session (two weeks): $1,895 + application fee

These costs include all activities, instruction, housing and meals.

Truthfully, the “real” cost of LSM is about $7,000 per student, but family costs are heavily subsidized thanks to support from hundreds of donors. Learn more on the Tuition and Financial Support page.

YES! We are committed to working with each family to remove financial barriers to attendance. Our most popular option is the LSM Match Grant, which supports students in fundraising, and matches every dollar raised at 50%, up to a $500 contribution from LSM. Yes! LSM will accommodate absences from July 16-20 for Full Session students wishing to attend the 2024 ELCA Youth Gathering in New Orleans. LSM will designate a flight itinerary from Chicago O’Hare to New Orleans, and facilitate travel from Valparaiso University to the airport on July 16, and back on July 20. Students may then meet up with their own youth groups in New Orleans – LSM will coordinate with families and church groups to facilitate this. Families will be responsible for their own travel expenses from LSM to the Gathering and back, including the bus shuttle and airfare. The Lutheran church’s rich musical heritage has had a profound influence on much of western classical music, and we share these traditions with joy at LSM!

In addition to advanced musical instruction and secular musical experiences, students will see and experience sacred music in worship services, including a Bach Cantata, liturgy, and classic and modern hymns from Lutheran hymnals (LBW, ELW, LSB, etc.) as well as other traditions. Service music is shared on all instruments – organ, strings, brass, winds, piano, bells, guitar, percussion – with the primary instrument being congregational song.

We welcome students of all faiths and denominational backgrounds, and invite students to participate to their level of comfort.

Students live in a dormitory on the Valparaiso University campus. Students are assigned to “counseling groups” and live under the supervision of a caring Residence Counselor.

LSM 2024 takes place on the campus of Valparaiso University in Valparaiso, Indiana.

For students arriving by car, please plan to arrive between 12:00 PM and 3:00 PM (Central Time) on the first day of LSM: Sunday, June 30.

Checkout and departure occurs after closing worship on Sunday, July 28 between 11:30 and 2:30 PM.

For students arriving by air, LSM arranges a shuttle bus from Chicago airports for an additional fee of $50. This is a private charter that LSM contracts for delivery to/from Valparaiso University.

LSM staff will be present by 11:00am to meet students at the Chicago airports, and the shuttle will leave at 3:00pm. Please schedule your arrival flight to land by 2:30pm CT on Sunday, June 30.

There will also be a shuttle that leaves Valparaiso University on July 14 (for half-session students) and on July 28 (for full-session students) as necessary. Please schedule flights to depart no sooner than 3:30 PM CT on your student’s departure date.

Yes! The dining services at Valparaiso University provide a variety of meal options daily, including hot entrees, pizza, sandwiches, fresh fruit, cereal, salad and dessert bars. All meals are labeled to accommodate dietary restrictions (Gluten Free, Vegan, etc.) LSM will also coordinate with Valpo dining services to provide specially prepared meals for students with food allergies. We are accessible. Lutheran Summer Music and all our programs provide a welcoming home for students with disabilities. All of our activities take place in facilities that are compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and staff and faculty are ready to create a successful learning environment for all participants.

Our policies and protocols adhere to requirements of our host site, Valparaiso University, and recommendations by the CDC. As of September 2023, individuals who test positive for COVID-19 must self-isolate for five days, and mask for five days. Protocols will be updated in June 2024 with current guidelines.
