HOW TO JOIN THE LSM “SCHOOL”:

  • Text @LSMa-f to 81010. Follow the prompts (if prompted, add yourself as a “teacher,.”)

  • “You’ve joined Lutheran Summer Music! Next, get the Remind app…” Click the link and download the Remind app to your phone.

  • Open the app and sign up for an account with your cell phone number. Create a password. If prompted, click “allow” for notifications.)

  • You should now be part of the Lutheran Summer Music “school”!

HOW TO JOIN YOUR CLASS:

  • In Remind, click the three lines in the upper lefthand corner.

  • Click “Add Class,” then “Join existing class,” then enter the code for your studio:

HOW TO HAVE STUDENTS JOIN YOUR CLASS:

If students have downloaded the app, they can open up Remind, and go to their menu (the three lines on the upper lefthand corner). They click “Add class,” then “Join existing class,” and then they enter your studio code!

Students can text your code to 81010 to simply receive messages from you as texts.

Meal Schedule:
Beginning 6/25 and going forward
Breakfast: 7am–8:30am
Lunch: 11:30am – 1:00pm
Dinner: 5:00pm – 6:30pm

Departure: A shuttle will depart Valparaiso University at 11:30am on July 23 to both Midway and O’Hare airports. If you are flying, please schedule your departure time for 3:00pm or later.

Parking: If you are driving to campus, and plan to have a vehicle during LSM, you will receive a free parking pass. Your vehicle information will be collected in the Transportation and Information Form. 

COVID-19 Vaccine Requirement: In accordance with Valparaiso University policy, all LSM students, faculty, staff, and fellows are required to be vaccinated against the COVID-19 virus. Medical exemptions may be granted when a physician letter or other demonstration of vaccine ineligibility is provided, and authorized religious exemptions may be granted when a serious and long-held belief and practice is expressed in a letter.

Mask and Isolation Policies: We will follow all Valparaiso University COVID-19 policies and procedures during LSM 2023, which are subject to change. Currently, if an individual tests positive for COVID-19, they must self-isolate for five days. Accommodations will be made to provide all meals and other needs until the isolation period ends. Individuals may also be required to mask temporarily (currently five days) following the release from isolation. Individuals who are directly exposed to someone who tests positive for COVID-19 may also need to mask for 10 days. If appropriate, faculty members may continue teaching lessons remotely over Zoom while in quarantine.

For Faculty

Faculty orientation begins at 3:00pm on Saturday, June 24 in the Duesenberg Recital Hall, Center for the Arts. Here is a recording of the June 14 pre-LSM online Zoom orientation session.

Faculty Recitals: Draft faculty recital assignments may be viewed here. Note these listings are NOT in program order- program order will be determined once we are on campus and take into account performer and stage management needs. Faculty members will be able to review program drafts before they are finalized.

Continuing in 2023, all recitals will be livestreamed to both an audience on campus and to the general public via the LSM Facebook page. Recordings of recitals will not be saved/archived online without the approval of all performers after the performance. Dates of faculty recitals this summer are (subject to change):

  • Monday, June 26: Faculty Recital

  • Sunday, July 2: Faculty Recital

  • Monday, July 3: Faculty Recital

  • Thursday, July 6: Omega String Faculty Recital (rep not needed until we’re on campus)

  • Sunday, July 9: Sine Nomine Voice Faculty Recital (rep not needed until we’re on campus)

  • Monday, July 10: Movere Woodwind Faculty Recital (rep not needed until we’re on campus)

  • Tuesday, July 11: Praetorius Brass Faculty Recital (rep not needed until we’re on campus)

Fellow Repertoire: Fellows have shared the repertoire they are interested in performing or studying this summer. See their responses here, which may be helpful as you consider music to bring to LSM.

Housing Info: Faculty will reside in Promenade East & West. Staff will reside in Promenade or Beacon Hall.

Promenade Apartments are two-story unit apartments include a common area living room, full kitchen, two bedrooms, and two and a half bathrooms. Each bedroom includes twin XL beds, desks with chairs, dressers, and closets. Each apartment has a common area living room with seating, a coffee table, television, and entertainment center. There is also a kitchen table with chairs and bar stools for the island on the first floor. Major appliances such as an oven, refrigerator, microwave, washer, and dryer are also included.

Not provided - please plan to bring your own:

  • Bed linens and towels

  • Pillow (note: if you request a university-provided linen set, a pillow is NOT included)

  • Toilet paper

  • Handsoap

  • Towels

  • Laundry detergent

  • Dress can be casual during the day, and business casual for evening recitals

  • Performance clothes for your chamber music and solo performances

You may also wish to bring kitchen items such as dishes, utensils, cookware, dish soap, etc., or additional comfort items such as mattress pads.

For Fellows

Fellow orientation begins at 9am on Saturday, June 24th in room 1519, Center for the Arts.

Audition: All fellows should be prepared to play a brief audition (5 minutes or less of music of your choice) for your department faculty members on Sunday, June 25. This informal audition will help faculty determine chamber music and large ensemble assignments as well as provide an opportunity to discuss your goals for LSM 2023.

Chamber Music: Fellows will have the opportunity to form chamber groups with other fellows and participate in coaching sessions with the LSM faculty. LSM faculty may assign chamber music groups to fellows, and fellows are also welcome to form their own groups and approach faculty members for coaching sessions throughout the summer. Fellow chamber music groups may perform on any fellow recital and/or the student chamber music recital.

Solo Repertoire: Please complete the online recital and repertoire information form by May 26. This form will be used to create assignments for collaborative pianists. Fellows will be able to sign up for recital appearances with the Events Manager once on campus. Additional performance opportunities are available at off-campus locations and in worship settings.

  • Saturday, July 15: Fellow Recital

  • Monday, July 17: Fellow Recital

  • Wednesday, July 19: Fellow Recital

What to Bring:

  • Folding music stand

  • Piano parts for any music you wish to study or perform

  • Medical insurance card

  • Blankets, linens, (linen sizes are Twin XL), and towels

  • Pillow (note: if you request a university-provided linen set, a pillow is NOT included)

  • Business casual clothes for attending recitals and concerts

  • Concert dress for large ensembles:

    • White button-down shirt with a black necktie or white blouse.

    • Black dress slacks with black socks and black belt or long black skirt (mid-calf or longer).

    • Closed-toed black dress shoes, flats, or low heels.

Housing Info: Fellows and some staff will reside in Beacon Hall. Alcohol is prohibited in all on-campus housing, including Beacon Hall.

Beacon Hall is a suite-style hall with 2–4 rooms in each unit. They are equipped with in-suite bathrooms, furniture including Twin XL beds, wardrobes, desks with chairs, bookshelves and dressers. There is a fridge, stove, and microwave on each floor.

Linens are not provided, please plan to bring your own. If this is not possible, a limited number of university-provided linen sets are available and may be requested by contacting Lauren Hartman.
